Matrics to rewrite English Setwork

with 4 comments

Matrics across the Western Cape will rewrite Paper 2 of the English Exam on November 23 said a spokesperson for the WCED this morning. This story courtesy of www.iol.co.za [direct link to article]

Western Cape matric students are to rewrite an English paper after it emerged that it was handed out in error in an earlier exam.

The province’s education department said the English first language higher grade paper two would be rewritten on November 23.

It said the paper was mistakenly handed to some candidates at the South African College High School (SACS) on October 10, the day before the exam, and details of it had spread to other schools.

The department had terminated the contract of the chief invigilator at SACS and had issued a verbal warning to the head of the English department at the school. – Sapa

I’d like to state categorically that I think this is a pathetic waste of time. If 5% of the Western Cape students were even aware of the leak it would be a lot, an even smaller percentage of those would be aware of the paper’s content. The “termination” of the chief invigilator’s contract is without a doubt a desperate reaction by the WCED to save face. Surely the invigilator in question made an honest mistake? And a verbal warning to the Head of English at SACS? Hello?! What is this world coming to?

  1. Where is the logic (or definite lack thereof) in this. So the UN-education department says that ALL (Logic??) matrics have to rewrite on the 23rd (where alot of matrics would’ve finished exams WAY before then)! And what’s worse it is the literature paper! It’s not like language which would probably require minimum revision – These poor matriculants now have to re-revise all their poems and relevant Shakespeare and/or novels! *Sigh*

  2. As one of the poor matric students who has to rewrite the English setwork paper, I’m not too happy. The education department didn’t consider those who are writing Computer Studies Theory on the 22 November, or History students writing the day before that. Now certain people have three exams in a row that require major revision.

The leak did hit our school, but most kids here didn’t hear any details on the paper, only that there’d been a leak. *reluctantly returns to the study desk*

  3. I think everyone is over reacting to the decision of the rewrite. News24.com published a story today that says students on Facebook have created numerous groups targeting SACS and the WCED decision are rallying to fight it!

First of all, you cant take anything on Facebook seriously because its a social networking site, secondly this are Matrics! What the hell do they know anyway?

And students revolting? Please people, they just feel special because they have to rewrite an exam, I really think the country shouldn’t take the students’ reaction seriously.

If you think about it, the WCED actually made the right decision, imagine if they let that slide! I could just see the chaos. I would and you would have made the matrics rewrite that paper; there was no other choice.

And besides what are the matrics complaining about? They get to learn for a paper TWICE, i.e. the average % around the country will go up…bloody teenagers….

Shame poor WCED just the type of story the media loves to target.
